After a god-awful experience at the the Grand Cayman airport where the airport asshole crushed my Panama hat like a $10 Chinatown knockoff getting into Cuba was a breeze. A fifty minute flight and in no time through immigration and customs. The Cuban people are wonderful always smiling and friendly.
We hop a taxi and take the twenty minute palm tree drive to the Hotel Nacional. You who have followed my blogs know how I feel about this hotel so I won't repeat myself.
We hit the check in desk but are told we need to go to the sixth floor for private executive check in experience. Very nice. Sarah is taking in everything with a big smile as we walked pass the Moorish lobby into the wood paneled elevator to the executive desk. We are greeted at the desk with warm smiles and give a corner suite overlooking the famous Melecoln. We find out they have a better well somewhat better Internet room policy. We get our private passwords. Unfortunately, we both need a pass code to surf at the same time which costs us $24 dollars a day. Oh well.
The room is magnificent, one of their historic rooms but for the life of me I never heard of the actress/singer Sara Montiel who stayed in this room. We overlooked the famous El Morro castle one one side, the water off the second bedroom window and the road along the Melecon from the living room window. This is a real suite with separate large living room and big bedroom with a large bathroom. So here we are and what is a couple to do? Go immediately to the bar and welcome ourselves to Havana. I take Sarah down to the porch area, she does not know where to look with so many old, historic photographs and things to read but her good sense tells her--drink first, read later.
We find some large comfortable chairs overlooking the water and settle down. I ask Sarah to order me a daiquiri as I need to change money and want to contact my friend Miguel for a classic car tour of Havana. I cone back to see Sarah enjoying a Cuban Sandwich and with drinks at the ready. The large comfortable chairs are a joy to sit, relax, converse and drink while lounging back. One, two, three drinks later and it is getting we notice it is dark out. Sarah is getting tired and wants to head to the room to rest. What, rest, we rest when we are dead Havana awaits and it is only like seven o'clock. Sure we are a little in the wind from the booze but that is never a reason to not keep the wheel of time spinning. I realize the January vacation is her travel time, so I go back with her to the room to further unpack, read and.....
