The title from the movie Cool Runnings with John Candy about the first ever warm weather bobsled Olympic team is what comes to mind about Jamaica.
So we land....go through the usual immigration and customs. We search for our shuttle bus and off we are...
We arrive at the hotel which is only 20 minutes from the airport. Along the way, we dropped off other passengers. The first stop was a hideous purple colored hotel named the Riu. Sarah whispers to me, "I hope this is not our hotel." I laugh and shake my head. We continue on to The Iberostar Suites hotel which I picked for that important reason. I wanted to be close to the airport for our getaway to Havana. we are greeted not with a drink like in the Dominican Republic our but at least with smiles and happy faces. We do the usual check in dance are given keys and head to the elevator.
We are on the fourth (top) floor. The first thing I notice, well the second thing after no welcome booze is the walk to the room after getting off the elevator takes the length of bible. This place is huge. Our room is a suite with with balcony overlooking the water. By suite, I mean there is extra area for a fold out sofa. Time to find the bar.....
We head down to the lobby bar and begin to get orientated to our home for the next three nights. The bar is packed as it is dinner time. The place is filled with not only couples but young groups of friends sharing a room and the dreaded families with kids. I love kids but not on planes or hotels where I stay. Thank the gods we got a top floor so no noise from kids running back-and-forth. We are fortunate a couple leaves for dinner and we grab the table for two and order a couple of drinks. Our first drinks were disappointing. I love rum and colorful drinks. I order a Blue Hawaii and Sarah a Cosmo. Sarah's was a in a miniature martini glass no way to clear the travel cobwebs and mine was made terrible. We switched to larger glasses for her and Platters Punch for me which was excellent.
After sufficient lubrication, we decided to head downstairs to one of the seven restaurants in the place. We arrive and told we needed a reservation, so we go upstairs to guest services procure our reservation and go back down this lovely, marble, long staircase two floors to the Mexican restaurant. The food was excellent. A good meal, some good booze and now time to head to the room to unpack and relax.
