The ride out was long and in a minivan. The brochure showed a big, comfortable tourist bus but what came was a packed minivan. We were the last ones picked up and had to take the only seats left. I was stuck in the middle front but thankfully I had legroom. Our tour guide was the worst I ever have experienced. He would switch between Spanish and English in the middle of sentences, had a thick accent and speech impediment. Needless to say, he was difficult to understand.
The ride to Chichen Itza is about 2 hours from Tulum. I was happy to get off the van with the only consolation is that we would be the first to be dropped off. I have to remember, private tour, private tour next time!!!!!!
The site was a short commercial filled walk to the central Mayan Plaza area where the main temples and buildings were located. The site was very well maintained, too well with way too many vendors and paved walkways. While the structures were symmetrically beautiful you got a processed feel to this historic site. The other issues is that all the buildings were roped off so you cold not climb or walk on any of the sites. Sadly, not like my Central America trip where even Tikal you were able to have full access to each temple and building.
There were some amazing buildings the ball court is the largest in the Mayan world, the building of a thousand columns and the temple where at just the right time the sun would pass though the building. The necropolis where skulls were carved of those sacrificed was fascinating along with the wonderful carvings on the ball court walls.
The lad is back.....This time Sarah accompanies him on this adventure that begins in the rum fields of Jamaica then moves to the city of my dreams--- Havana and ends in Mayan heaven in Tulum Mexico. Sarah will be blogging along with her own unedited views. May the gods watch over me!
